temporary summer

And so yesterday hit an official high of 90 in Chicago?  Where do they take that measurement anyway?  The inside of the oven at Gino's East?

3H: time is running low: capstones are due on tuesday!  times are due on monday!  also, we started work today on Macbeth essays based in part on the posters we made yesterday.  we'll work on them tomorrow.  i have a lab for 1st but so far not for 7th; bring hard copies as well as computer files to work with.

2CP: brochure groups: a couple of people from each group will be able to go to the library to us the computers in the tech lab (second floor) to finish up.  poster groups will have time to finish in class.  then we can work on presenting your projects.

do you realize that after today we only have three more tuesdays?

Yes, I can start doing crap like that.  ;-)

3H: Today we created focused posters based on individual scenes in the play.  I asked you to use the specific imagery in the scenes as the basis of the posters, seeding them with the lines of text and germinating visuals from there.  You came up with some very interesting ideas, which you all can look at tomorrow.

Tonight, I'd like you to refamiliarize yourselves with the scenes that were covered by these posters in order to better prepare for what is to come:

I.v, I.vii, II.iv, III.ii, III.iv, IV.iii, the military scenes of Act Five (V.ii, V.iv, V.vi, and post-beheading V.viii), and all of the soliloquies spoken by Macbeth or Lady Macbeth throughout the play.

Tomorrow, you will be examining the posters and using them as a leaping-off point for the final essay on this play.  It will help considerably if you have refamiliarized yourselves with these parts of the play.

Capstones are dues one week from today.

2CP: Today we researched Steinbeck, intellectual disability, and migrant workers in the library.  We will continue that tomorrow on the way to creating the projects that each group has been assigned.  We'll discuss project due dates tomorrow.

Tonight: Read Section 1 (through p. 16) of Of Mice and Men.

Drama:  Today we started a read-through of "Butterfinger."  We will finish that tomorrow and then the honors students are on your own to make it happen.  (Yet another good reason to have been off book by yesterday.)  We meet in 305 tomorrow.

LIVE! From 8th Period in the Testing Ctr: It's Your Daily Blog!

(What else is there to do down here?)

So I hope you all had a good weekend.  I know I did, for a change.  :-)  Took my daughter to see "Next to Normal," "Hanna," and "Thor."  Enjoyed all of them, too.  And then I got to watch the latest installment of the current best show on TV, "The Killing," which airs on AMC on Sunday nights, and if you're missing it you are missing perfection.  (You probably can't jump into the middle, but trust me: a marathon of this show would be dynamite.  I always want to watch another episode the second the one I'm watching is over.)

All that and sunshine too!

3H: Capstones are due on May 17.  They must be timed by May 16.  Macbeth tomorrow.

2CP:  We'll meet in 305 tomorrow before going to the library.

Drama: Meet in the DMT.  Bring both plays.

Capstone info here.

2CP:  Portfolios are in; time to move on!  On Monday we'll discuss "The Things They Carried" and move toward Of Mice and Men.  RW Friday.

Drama: You should be off book Monday.  Meet in 305, and then we'll move to DMT.  Honors play copies will be handed out Monday.  I have cleared it with the playwright.

time flies when you're having fun

Yes, sophomores, it's your turn now.  Portfolios are due tomorrow.
(Have a nice night.)
BTW: You do not want to find out what happens if it is late.
Oh, and bring $9 for Of Mice and Men and goodies to party with!

3H: Bring Macbeth tomorrow.

Drama: Last day in the classroom tomorrow.  Bring costume/prop lists!

So here's my question today: if you could do this (and I'll admit it's pretty amazing), would you put it on youtube?

so...whaddja think?

For most days in the past two or three weeks, I have included with my blog posts videos of songs by one of the greatest musical satirists of all time, a Harvard math professor named Tom Lehrer who enjoyed phenomenal success in the late 50's and early 60's.  His lyrics, though often intentionally silly, skewer just about every aspect of life as he lived it in those very interesting days, and many are still extraordinarily relevant today.  One of his songs, "The Elements," was recently sung on a British talk show by Daniel Radcliffe (a clip I included).  I've actually performed that song myself onstage in a student-teacher variety show at the school I taught at in the early 80's.

So what I'm wondering is: what did you think of him?  Did you enjoy his more intellectual brand of humor?  Did he lose you with his button-down appearance?  Did you like some songs more than others?  Let me know; I'm quite curious!

3H: We'll be discussing symbolism and themes in Macbeth.

2CP: Back by popular demand: another WW day!

Drama:  Memorize!!  And get me those character lists.

Songs I have already shared:  The Elements, Masochism Tango, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, The Vatigan Rag, Smut, National Brotherhood Week, So Long Mom (A Song For WWIII), New Math, and Oedipus Rex.

And here is something else from Tom Lehrer, a truly uplifting song:

And another bomb song:

Here we have Lehrer on STD's:

And here's Lehrer's environmentalist side:

we're ba-a-a-a-ck!

So...howdja enjoy that there five day weekend?  Good.  Ya won't get another till we're done!  Hah!  Take that! (No, I'm not jealous or anything...)

3H: Shakespeare shirts were great.  :-)  If you did not wear your today due to absence, you need to wear it tomorrow all day.  Don't forget!  And if you're donating it to the cause, bring it in tomorrow!  Speaking of tomorrow...we'll be discussing Act Five before we focus a bit on some specific things like, y'know, symbolism and theme and stuff...

2CP: As requested, we'll have another WW tomorrow if you use it well.  "The Things They Carried" essay is due today.

Drama: You need to be off-book by Monday.  Also: I need a list of character items for your characters.  ASAP.

The most obvious comedy of the week was provided by Seth Meyers at the White House Correspondents' Dinner:
