hi, hi, hi, beautiful sunday...

Oh, come on, juniors...you know you'll have a great time this Sunday. It's what you live for. :-)

(And don't forget: on Monday, it will be all over!)

Juniors: The link for the Anouilh Antigone is on the 3H page (books/Theban Plays). Or anyway it will be as soon as I can work out a kink or three. This is due on Thursday.

Oh, and there is this small project due on Monday. Bring food to party. :-)

Sophs: RW Monday, but there is a Death of a Salesman assignment for the weekend. Here it is: There are six main characters in this play. For each, find one key quotation that and one that they say and one that someone else says that you believe embody who they are and what they are all about. Write these two quotations down. Then write one paragraph in which you explain the thing you feel is the essence of the character. When you are finished, you will have 12 quotations and 6 paragraphs. This should be typed and double-spaced.

Drama: Monday is full o'stuff:
  • finishing the SPY GAME
  • finishing the behavior scenes
  • Matt's monologue?
  • parent monologues
  • teacher scenes
  • written work for monologue analysis due

Written monologue work:

  • create a Word file and type your monologue into it
  • divide file into three columns, and place column break at end of column one
  • place another column break at top of column 2 and again at top of column 3, leaving both columns empty
  • repeat on next page or pages if necessary
  • in Column 2, add notes about the text: what is being said, how it relates to anything you know about the context of the monologue or the character, interpretations of elements in the text/symbols or metaphors/etc., questions and random thoughts about the character based on the text
  • in Column 3, add OBJECTIVES for the monologue (remember to phrase them in strong active verbs; go back and look on pages 17-21). Depending on the monologue, there might be a single one that is consistent throughout, one objective with tactical changes, or perhaps several changing objectives. Also in this column try to define some subtext you might employ in performing this monologue.
i did misremember: daniel boone is a one hit wonder all right, but he's a single guy from the good ol' u s of a:

for those who want your sunday sung by someone beautiful...

want a hip hop remix? :-)

and just in case your Sunday isn't beautiful enough, listen to this guy's cover of the song:

if he practices very hard, he could grow up to be this guy:

this is a test

For the next five days, this blog will be holding a test of the Emergency Portfolio Network. This is only a test.*

Juniors: countdown is (guess) 5 days. More Thebes tomorrow. Posting still available; just start your own topics.

Sophs: Nice conversation today, esp for a shortened period! (Great comments, Sarah and Danielle!) More DOAS tomorrow...posting still available tonight.

Drama: SPY DAY tomorrow!

*This concludes this test of the Emergency Portfolio Network. If this had been an actual portfolio emergency, you would be instructed where to click for munchies, plastic slips, random decorative items, printer ink, and massive amounts of caffeine. Since this blog is not operative on Sunday night, though, you're probably going to be on your own.

I'm not sleepy

Go figure. You sleep for four days, maybe you just don't need it anymore. :-)

Or maybe it's because I'm drinking coffee again. Speaking of which, how's this for a description:

Coffee People Black Tiger Keurig K-Cups can best be described as the ANTI-decaf coffee. This earthy favorite from Coffee People is SUPER caffeinated.
Or how about the one called "Jet Fuel"?
If you are looking for an accurate description of Coffee People Jet Fuel Keurig K-Cups, do you remember when the bad guy drank the can of oil before arm wrestling Sly Stallone in Over the Top? Yeah, Coffee People Jet Fuel Keurig K-Cups are just like that.
Anyway...

If you start thinking I am acting totally buzzed sometime next month, you'll know these new K-cups have arrived. :-)

Juniors: The countdown stands at 6 days. Thebans tomorrow. Boards tonight.

Sophs: DOAS tomorrow. Boards tonight.

Drama: More behavior scenes tomorrow. Monologue picks due. SPY game culminates Thursday.

And for your pleasure: here's a glimpse into a Superhero Retirement Home.

une semaine de plus...una semana más...noch eine Woche...1週間...

And we are in the last week!

(Sorry, Bonamico: no dice on the week-long workshop. Sorry, Whoever Mumbled It: no dice on the extension.)

:-)

I'm sitting, waiting, wondering (with apologies to Jack Johnson) who might actually turn one in this week...

Anyway...

Juniors: Umm...in case you had not heard... PORTFOLIOS ARE DUE NEXT MONDAY!!!
I mean, in case you missed that point. Someone could have.

Also: Board discussion of Theban issues is ongoing tonight and tomorrow. If you cannot participate, talk to me for alternative assignments.

Sophomores: If you missed conferences last week, don't fear: next week is WIDE OPEN. WW tomorrow, and DOAS board discussions continue through tomorrow night.

Drama Class: Pick a monologue! Behavior scenes begin tomorrow! Spy day is probably Thursday! I'm using a lot of exclamation points!

ashes, ashes...

ah...forty days until Easter. You know Spring can't be too far away!

Everyone: If you have submitted pieces to Young Idea, and you did not think to submit clean, black copies with the cross-outs deleted, please resubmit ASAP.

Juniors: Go online and talk about the structure of the Theban Plays. (Or, if you can't, prepare some personal notes for tomorrow.)

Sophs: Be ready for DOAS discussion!

Drama: Behavior scenes! Again, the assignment is to show us a scripted improv scene of a typical behavior (that has some degree of risk--whatever is comfortable to you) and then an atypical behavior in a separate scene.

feel the chill

Ah, the joy of having English class in a walk-in refrigerator. :-)

Maybe tomorrow will be better. Or maybe we should all dress in many, many layers...

E3H: We will be doing some comparative discussion this week about Oedipus and Antigone, as well as talking about what makes Sophoclean tragedy tick. Oh, and somewhere along the way we'll probably look at some projects...

E2H: We'll be discussing many issues and themes in Death of a Salesman starting tomorrow. And probably looking at some projects, too.

Drama: Don't forget those Character Relation Monologues!

You've probably seen the Hitler parody videos. (I think I've even used one once.) Well, here is the ultimate Hitler parody video:

Yes, folks, another countdown is coming to a close. It's Valentine's Day weekend. :-)

Juniors: projects due Tuesday. (Workshops that day) Read Oedipus and Antigone by Wednesday.

Sophomores: projects due Tuesday. (Workshops that day.) Read Death of a Salesman by Wednesday.

Drama: anything you already owe me is due Tuesday, plus: Moebius scenes if possible to complete and character identification monologues (just below story jokes) in the same chapter: #7). Spy game continues...

long snow, short day

We really should start school at 9:50 every day.

Anyway...

Juniors... We are now reading The Theban Plays. For tomorrow, read as much of Oedipus the King as you can. You'll finish it (and read Antigone as well) by Wednesday. Essays are due tomorrow, projects by Tuesday.

Sophomores... We are now reading Death of a Salesman; read as much as you can of Act One tonight; you will finish the play over the long weekend.

Drama... Tonight's assignment (besides continuing the spy game and finding me a story joke if you owe me one and doing the don't bother me exercise if you owe me that--see why it's not a good idea to fall behind here?) is to develop (and practice) two brief 1-2 minutes monologues: one that tells of an interesting event that happened to you, and the other of an interesting event that did not happen to you.

Had enough snow? This weatherman in Baltimore sure has:

That's after the last storm that hit the area:

And this one has nothing to do with anything. It is just simply HILARIOUS!

Late start tomorrow. Sleep in. But do your homework first...

Juniors... you have your Portrait essays or projects to work on. And bring The Theban Plays to class.

Sophomores... you have your Grapes projects to work on. And bring Death of a Salesman to class.

Drama... Friday's homework, if you did not do it, is due tomorrow.

newsy Friday

Some news today:

Juniors... The project version of the Portrait assignment will have an extended deadline past the long V-Day weekend. The essay version will be due next Thursday.

  • Note: If you registered for Creative Writing, you must send your writing sample (300-500 word description of a place that means something to you) to Mrs. Forst ASAP! Do it today!
Sophomores... Your Grapes of Wrath projects have also been extended through the long weekend. However, you do have an assignment due on Tuesday:
  • Write a 2-page (500 words approximately) essay discussing one specific aspect of the John Ford film of The Grapes of Wrath as an interpretation of the John Steinbeck novel. In this essay, discuss why Ford might have made done it the way you are noting and what effect this has on our understanding of the book's message.
Drama... Here is an exercise in Concentration that you can try this weekend. It will take fifteen minutes. Find a place where you can go that is frequented by lots of people. (The mall?) Seek out a spot to stand, sit, lean, etc. Focus all of your attention on a specific object. See that object from every possible angle (without actually moving from your spot). Enter it if you can. Can you look out from within it? Do not move during this exercise. If someone comes up to you to ask what you are doing or if you are OK, reply, "Don't bother me; I'm acting." (You may add a "please" if it seems rude.) We'll discuss this on Monday.

Meanwhile...finish reading Chapter 1 and the opening of Chapter 2. Prepare a story joke (exercise 2.3/#6) for Tuesday.

Any Wes Anderson fans out there?

Tomorrow's Conferences: Check the schedule; next week's conferences have been rearranged to fit on a TWTh schedule.

registration elation

Ain't it just a gas when juniors register for class?

E3H: examples of ideas for projects...note that these are not perfect because they were done elsewhere and do not adhere to our parameters, but maybe they'll give you some food for thought...

E2H: More movie tomorrow.

Drama: TACTICS!

f e b r u a r y (it moves slowly)

Election central here:

The latest returns indicate that voters in the State of Illinois don't give a hoot about anything! I mean really: less than 30% turnout? In a state that is so far in the crapper that our budget makes my finances look better...really??? At a time when we have an open senate seat formerly held by the current US President and currently held by a bought-and-paid-for hack appointed by a deposed governor who is facing criminal charges for his trouble? Really?? What the heck is wrong with us????

So we are left with Giannoulias v. Kirk (oh goody), Seals v. Dold (Dold? what the heck is a Dold? and is there some kind of rule that GOP congressional candidates around here have to have four-letter names that start and end with the same consonant?), and the possibility of Baker (oy!) v. Quinn (whoopie!).

All of this sounds like a case of getting exactly what we deserve.

E3H: You are registering tomorrow.

E2H: Death of a Salesman cometh. Read Tragedy of the Common Man and discuss on the boards.

Drama: spy game is ongoing. Also: Find an example on DVD, youtube, hulu, or VHS that you can show us tomorrow of a brief scene from a TV show or film in which, as in the scenes today, two characters hold a conversation in which the subtext holds the real meaning and the text never actually goes there.

And finally, since the days do slog on, and many of us are really missing "Glee," here's a (sort of) fix for you:

E3H:

Your Portrait assignments (there are two of them: your choice!) have been uploaded to the E3H pages. See the Books section and choose from the first two options under this book.

E2H:

Oh, my, where will we be tomorrow?

How 'bout this? Read this essay!

Drama:

For tomorrow, come up with a scenario similar tot he one the book posits in 1.10.
