E3H, focus for small group Monday discussion is: SD's statements about Ireland (220), SD's parents and religion (259-265), SD's reasons for leaving (268-269), SD's final statements (26-27 April).
Drama: "Bring in" an unusual/interesting/entertaining persona you observe this weekend.
So, E2H, here is the Grapes of Wrath Project.
Your job is to find a scene, a chapter, or a section (or sections) of the book that uncovers a significant theme or concept that Steinbeck is getting across. Using some creative means, re-imagine it. Maybe you could revisit it as a short video. Maybe you could turn it into a musical. Maybe you could create a series of dioramas. Maybe you could make Rosasharn's lost baby book. Whatever you choose, make sure that the point is clear, the specific theme(s) you are discussing are illustrated well, and the whole project is enjoyable.
This is an individual project that will likely require you to help each other; however, certain kinds of projects might be done in pairs if you present sufficient explanation. Show me why you need a partner, and we'll discuss it.
Following are some examples of projects from other places that are already online. These do not derive from this same assignment, and therefore are not totally models for you. The best of them as a model is the claymation one, as it actually does what I am asking here. The book/movie review is also excellent.
Here is an excellent example of a project that does everything I am asking for, using basic claymation and a Star Wars theme:
Here is a project that reviews the book/movie based on today's economy:
Here is a project that retells the story as a rap. If it came with some sense of exploring a theme, it might work:
Here is one that retells much of the story but uses images from history throughout; refocus it a bit so a central message becomes clear and it would be a wonderful project for this assignment:
And here is one that uses silent film techniques to tell the tale. It's occasionally rather silly, but again, if it explored a theme, it could work:

school daze
Ah, the end of yet another day of school. Such joy. So many smiling faces pouring out into the chilled cloudy day, where the smiles are immediately flash-frozen into something like grimaces and the laughter crackles dryly in the Arctic air.
Ah, for a way to move this town to Hawaii...
Anyway...
E2H: We are finished reading the book now. Discussing the WHOLE THING tomorrow!!!
E3H: Tomorrow's discussions will center on STEPHEN'S AESTHETIC THEORIES. Review especially the following pages: The Tragic Emotion 222ff Applied Aquinas 229-233
Drama: Tonight you should read through Exercise 1.8 and prepare what you would do if you were called upon to show it to us tomorrow. Also: how would you improvise YOUR OWN VERSION of a similar scene?

optional finals practice
This is the optional finals prep story for both sophomores and juniors:
If you choose to do this, give yourself two hours (time it on your honor), sit down, and begin.
- Read the story to experience it.
- Take a moment to consider possible main ideas.
- Read it a second time, highlighter in hand, looking for passages.
- Do whatever kind of pre-writing helps you most.
- OUTLINE your essay.
- Begin writing.
- When you finish, if there is still time, review your essay for errors or issues. Revise as time allows. When time is up:
- If you typed the first draft, just send it to me. If you did not, take the time to type it now or scan what you wrote and send me the file.
That idea may relate to a character or characters in the story, a dominant theme that emerges from it, or literary techniques the author uses to convey its central concepts. You may also use a combination of these approaches if you prefer.
Before you begin writing, plan your essay using any strategies you have found helpful—brainstorming, outlining, free writing, webbing, etc.
Focus your essay on a strong thesis statement; use mapping statements, mapping points, or some other clear plan to establish the paper’s organization; and prove your
arguments with solid textual support.

exam prep
Nice work, sophs, on your first practice exam today. Remember that your assignment (due via email by Friday) is to explain or argue your grade using the rubric and quoting from your essay in either Word or Powerpoint format.
In class tomorrow: you may have some RW time (though there is a small chance I might be able to find a lab, i which case you'll be able to begin this project).
E3H: The practice final for your class will be Hanif Kureshi's "My Son the Fanatic." Read it tonight (p. 693 of your book). In class tomorrow you will be asked to write about the following prompt:
Write an essay that explores an important idea suggested by this story.
Remember, this essay is an exploration of ideas, not a plot summary.
Bring your own paper. At the end of class, you'll take it with you. You are on your honor not to change a thing, but I will need you to type it into an email and send it to me so I can score it and return it to you promptly.
Friday will be a workshop day.
CW: Stacey and Austin shared stellar projects with us online, along with Kristie and Jeffrey with their reflective pieces.

worst day of the week
At least that is what my second period students tell me: Tuesday is the worst day of the week. Something about every other day having some purpose but Tuesday just being a drag on the whole system. I have nothing against it myself, and it has given us some cool songs ( "Tuesday Afternoon"--Moody Blues, "Ruby Tuesday"--Rolling Stones, "Sweet Tuesday Morning"--Badfinger, "Tuesday Morning"--The Pogues, "Tuesday's Gone"--Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Voices Carry"--'Til Tuesday
:-)
Anyway...
CW projects continue to
E3H finished up (just about) Chapter 4. Take a look at the Department Rubric (link on the left) so we can discuss the final exam tomorrow.
E2H took a practice "final" which I will try to grade by tomorrow so we can discuss it.
